Why Your Snapchat Memories Are Not Loading (iOS & Android Fixes 2026)
· 6 min read · Troubleshooting
Memories that show as grey tiles, spin forever, or throw "Tap to load" and then fail are among the most reported Snapchat problems. The good news: in most cases the content is intact and the fault is in the connection between your app and Snapchat's servers.
This guide works through the causes in order of likelihood, on both iOS and Android, and covers the separate case of memories failing inside a data export.
Before anything else: your memories are almost certainly fine
Memories are stored on Snapchat's servers, not on your phone. A loading failure means the app cannot fetch them right now — not that they have been deleted.
Two signs that confirm the content still exists:
- the tiles are listed in the Memories grid, even if blank
- the dates appear correctly under them
If entries have vanished entirely rather than failing to render, that is a different situation. See recovering deleted memories.
Fix 1: Rule out the connection
Obvious, but it accounts for a large share of cases. Memories are downloaded on demand, and thumbnails are heavier than they look.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If it loads on one but not the other, the network is the problem.
- Turn off VPNs and ad blockers. Both frequently interfere with Snapchat's media servers, and VPN routing in particular can break media loading while the rest of the app works fine.
- Test on a different network. Some corporate, school and public networks restrict media-heavy traffic.
- Check whether Snapchat itself is down. An outage affects media before it affects messaging. Search for reports before troubleshooting your device for an hour.
Fix 2: Clear the cache (the single most effective step)
Snapchat's cache is where corruption accumulates, and clearing it fixes memory loading more often than anything else. It does not delete your memories — they live on the server.
On both platforms:
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon.
- Tap the gear icon for Settings.
- Scroll to Account Actions.
- Tap Clear Cache, then confirm.
The app will feel slower briefly while it re-downloads what it needs. That is expected.
On Android, if that is not enough, you can go further: Settings, Apps, Snapchat, Storage, Clear Cache. Do not tap Clear Storage — that signs you out and wipes app data. You would keep your memories, but you would need to log back in, which is a problem if account recovery is shaky.
Fix 3: Update, then restart
Version-specific bugs affecting Memories are common, and they get patched.
- Update Snapchat from the App Store or Play Store.
- Fully close the app — swipe it away from the app switcher, not just background it.
- Restart the phone. This clears stale network state that survives an app restart.
- Reopen and let Memories load without scrolling for thirty seconds.
That last point matters more than it seems: scrolling rapidly through a large Memories grid cancels and restarts image requests continuously. On a slow connection the app never finishes any of them. Let it settle.
Fix 4: Check storage on your device
An almost-full phone breaks caching in ways that look like network errors. Snapchat needs working space to download and render media.
Aim for at least a couple of gigabytes free. Delete unused apps or clear other caches, then reopen Snapchat. This resolves a surprising number of "nothing loads" reports.
Fix 5: Reinstall (with one precaution)
Reinstalling clears everything local and usually resolves stubborn cases.
Before you uninstall, make sure you can log back in. Confirm you know your password and have access to the phone number or email used for two-factor authentication. If there is any doubt, do not reinstall — an account you cannot re-enter is far worse than memories that load slowly. Account access first.
Once confirmed: uninstall, reinstall from the official store, and sign in. Memories re-download from the server.
When it is not the app: memories failing in a data export
A different problem with the same symptom. You requested your Snapchat data, opened the archive, and the media will not download.
The cause is almost always expired links. A Snapchat export does not usually contain your photos — it contains an index with one signed download link per memory. Those links are valid for a few days after the export is generated, then stop working.
Symptoms of expired links:
- the archive opens normally and lists every memory with correct dates
- every download attempt fails, or produces an empty file
- it fails consistently, not intermittently
There is no way to renew them. The fix is to request a fresh export and act on it the same day it arrives. Full explanation in what a Snapchat export contains.
If your export is recent and still failing, the cause may instead be:
- Snapchat's servers under load. Retrying later often works.
- Too many parallel downloads. Requesting hundreds of files at once gets you rate-limited. SnapMemories handles this with a single controlled queue, which is precisely why bulk downloads succeed through it where a browser stalls.
- Video that will not play locally. The file downloaded correctly but your player does not support the encoding. See opening export files.
Platform-specific notes
iOS
- Low Power Mode throttles background network activity. Turn it off while loading Memories.
- Low Data Mode, under Wi-Fi or Cellular settings, restricts downloads and breaks media loading. Disable for the network you are on.
- Confirm Snapchat has permission for Cellular Data under Settings, Cellular.
Android
- Data Saver, under Network and Internet, blocks background data. Exempt Snapchat or disable it.
- Battery optimisation can suspend Snapchat's network activity. Set it to unrestricted.
- On some manufacturer skins, aggressive memory management kills the app mid-download. Lock Snapchat in the recent apps list if your device offers it.
Nothing worked — what now?
If you have worked through everything above:
- Request a data export. Even when the app misbehaves, the export path usually works. It also gives you a copy you keep regardless.
- Try signing in on another device. This separates an account problem from a device problem in one step.
- Contact Snapchat Support with specifics: your account name, when it started, what you have already tried, and whether it affects all memories or only some.
Prevent the next occurrence
The underlying vulnerability is that your only copy lives in someone else's cloud, reachable through one app.
- Export your memories periodically. Once a year is enough for most people.
- Keep a local copy, plus one somewhere else.
- Save important snaps to your camera roll at the time, not only to Memories.

Summary
Memories that will not load are usually a cache or connection problem, and clearing the cache fixes most of it. If the failure is in a data export instead, the cause is almost always expired download links — and the only remedy is a fresh export, used promptly.
